Birds at feeders presage snowstorm

Redpolls, Juncos, Goldfinches, Sparrows
all harbingers of wintery blast
On any given winter day, the birds at the backyard feeders number approximately 30 to 40 individuals, at any one time.   But when a winter storm approaches the numbers always swell to double or triple the regular number.   The photo above was taken on Tuesday morning prior to a messy snowstorm, with ice pellets and freezing rain that made life for commuters on the roads and birds at the feeders a challenge.   It never fails to amaze me how birds know that bad weather is imminent and that they should stuff themselves prior to the event.
