Red-bellied Woodpecker...

Photos by BarrytheBirder
Red-bellied Woodpecker
(Melanerpes carolinus)
Primarily a bird of the southeast United States, but in recent years it has been expanding its range to the north into southern Ontario.   Despite its name, the red on the belly is not often visible in the field.   My photos here do clearly show the red on the belly.   They were taken on the back deck of an old friend, coincidently named Ted Bird.

Vancouver Island Great Blue Heron by Dave Kemp

GREAT BLUE HERON
(Ardea herodias)

The Great Blue Heron is the 3rd largest heron in the world (2 to 3.5 kg).   Only the Goliath Heron (4 to 5 kg.) of Africa and south Asia, and the White-bellied Heron (3 to 3.5 kg.) of northeast India, Myanmar and Bhutan, are bigger.   Nice photos Dave.

SPOTTED TOWHEE
(Pipilo maculatus)
This western bird is distinguished from the similar Eastern Towhee by the white spotting on its back and scapular feathers near the shoulders.   Note the red/orange eyes.

Chipping Sparrow
Widespread and common in Canada, including the west coast.

Mid-April Yellow-rumped Warbler on Vancouver Island...

Another shot of a Yellow-rumped Warbler taken
by Dave Kemp on Vancouver Island's east shore

And here's some more information about this attractive early spring warbler.  It is also called the Myrtle Warbler from Alaska to Newfoundland and south to the Great Lakes and New York.  In British Columbia, south to Central America, it is known as Audubon's Warbler.   All plumages of this pretty, sparrow-sized bird, are characterized by a prominent yellow rump patch.   It's song is a rambling and variable warble or trill.   And below is another charming west coast spring water lily scene captured by Dave....

Early spring on Vancouver Island's eastern shore...

British Columbian and wildlife photographer Dave Kemp have welcomed a Yellow-rumped Warbler (photo above) on the east coast of Vancouver Island in early April.   He also photographed the Great Blue Heron (below) in an attention-getting stealth bomber profile image, as well as a colourful female Red-winged Blackbird (bottom).
