This splendid heron photo was a runner-up winner in Britain's The Guardian newspaper's January 2015 readers travel photography competition. Fred Williams captured the scene over the River Cauvery, near Mysore in southern India. Six islands in the river, at this spot, are regular nesting sites for herons. A photo like this breathlessly bespeaks the miracle of feathers and flight.
