Today - Common Merganser
(Mergus merganser)
FemaleThe Common Merganser is a large duck with a long slim neck and thick- based, hooked, red bill with a black tip. It is found across Canada and the U.S.A., mostly in fresh water and favouring lakes and rivers in all seasons. It is found in forested country in summer, frequently nesting in large tree cavities.
They prefer to feed on lakes but are often found on rivers in cold weather, where they are often found in flocks of 10 to 20 birds, all facing upstream and diving in pursuit off fish.
Mergansers have fine toothlike serrations along the side of their bills that help capturing slippery fish. Young males resemble adult females in spring.
