This Robin-sized plover is a most familiar shorebird, found generally in open country - golf courses, plowed fields and short-grass prairies. It's loud call, a clear kill-DEEE, is repeated many times. It breeds coast-to-coast in lower Canada and throughout the U.S.A.
When its open-ground nest is approached it feigns injury struggling along with wings dragging as if badly hurt. This behaviour often lures predators away from nests with eggs or youngsters. The adult bird then appears to recover from its feigned injury and loudly flies off.
