The Mallard Duck is widespread in Canada and the U.S.A., frequenting a wide range of of shallow-water environments. It is easily identified by its metallic green head, yellow bill, narrow white collar and chestnut breast.
They are found on ponds, lakes and marshes and they breed from Alaska and Greenland, south to the lower United States and Mexico. In winter they can be found south to Central America and the West Indies. They are also known to breed in Eurasia.
Mallards are the ancestor of the common white domestic duck and wild Mallards occasionally breed with with domestic ducks.
