Struthio camelus

Photo: Dan Callister / Alamy Stock Photo

The ostrich roams the great Sahara.
Its mouth is wide, its neck is narra.
It has such long and lofty legs,
I'm glad it sits to lay its eggs.

The Common Ostrich, pictured above, was photographed in South Africa at Cape Point, the most south western corner of the continent.

I looked up what Struthio Camelus means (as I was guessing that Camelus would be camel). It is Greek for Sparrow Camel. I had a smile.
In Farsi we call the ostrich*; Shotor Morgh which literally translated means: Camel Bird.
*(apparently the word ostrich does come from Struthio (sparrow); so does the German word Strauss (that is how Germans refer to this bird)).
