The Common Grackle is a very common almost everywhere east of the Rockies in lower Canada and throughout the eastern United States in towns, farms, swamps, and woods.   It is a large abundant  blackbird of parks, gardens, and a large variety of open habitats, including fields and marshes.  They are often seen walking on lawns and sometimes at feeders.

They nest in colonies.   In fall and winter, they sometimes travel in huge, noisy flocks, sometimes with other blackbirds.   They are gregarious, noisy, and conspicuous in their big flocks.

The Audubon Handbook of Eastern Birds says their most common call is a loud 'clack', and that it also produces various loud, squeaky notes like rusty hinges.
