Short-legged, stocky, with a large head and bill...and loud

Belted Kingfisher
(Megaceryle alcyon)

The Belted Kingfisher is the only kingfisher found in most of North America.   In the case of the bird pictured here, the  location is Vancouver Island, B.C.   It was taken by field naturalist and photographer Dave Kemp, whose photos I have included here many times in the past.   The Belted Kingfisher is usually seen along brooks, rivers, ponds and lakes, where it watches from low perches, or hovers over water, then plunges headfirst into water to catch a fish.   They are usually solitary creatures.   Many thanks for sharing your photos Dave.
