Common and widespread...

Red-tailed Hawk
(Buteo jamaicensis)
This large, stalky Buteo with the distinctive rufous tail feathers is found throughout most of North America.   It preys primarily on rodents (including squirrels), birds, amphibians and reptiles.   It will also occasionally take poultry. Its habitat is usually variable and includes nearby open land, plains and agricultural areas, plus deciduous forests.   Its call is a distinctive, harsh (almost screaming), descending 'keeeeer'.
