BRANT GEESE (or Brent Geese)
(Branta bernicla)

My Vancouver Island friend and nature photographer Dave Kemp has generously passed along some of his latest photos of Brant Geese on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island.   The Brant Goose is a small goose and there are three species.   The ones pictured here are Black Brant (B. b. nigricans), sometimes also known as the Pacific Brant in North America.  This goose has a short stubby bill and the tail is the shortest of any goose.   This species has a very contrastingly black and white appearance.   It also has large and distinctive white neck patches, which form a near-complete collar.  The population breeds in northwestern Canada, Alaska and eastern Siberia, and winters mostly on the west coast of North American.   Many thanks, Dave, for sharing your photos.
