Mute Swan (Cygnus olor)

Mute Swans are an old world species introduced to the United States from Europe in the 19th century.   They are most commonly seen in ponds of public parks and gardens as well as in the wild.

A black knob at the base of the orange bill is a prominent feature.

Mute Swans usually hold their long necks in a S-curve, with the bill pointed down, and often swim with their wings arched over their backs.

They give a variety of hisses and snorts, but are usually silent...however wingbeats are noisy in flight.

Mute swans can be aggressive, especially in defense of their nests.
