How many quail bird species in North America?

My National Geographic Field Guide says that scientific evidence has placed the new world quail in their own family. All have chunky bodies and crests or head plumes.   In North America, most live in the west.   I chose to use a photo of the Montezuma Quail to illustrate this blog entry because of this quail's very distinctive head markings.

The six quail species found in North America are:

California Quail

Gambel's Quail

Montezuma Quail

Mountain Quail

Northern Bobwhite

Scaled Quail

A group of quails is called a 'covey' of quails.
