Ravenshoe Sideroad canal...

Great Blue Heron

This Great Blue Heron was spotted in a south Lake Simcoe boating canal in an area of marshlands on the Ravenshoe Sideroad, west of Leslie Street.   This area of the Ravenshoe Sideroad is a significant area for many Ospreys and their nests.   One of the best areas for sightings is the double-diamonds baseball park on the north side of Ravenshoe Road, west of Leslie.   The photo below shows Ospreys there last year.

7 Ospreys on the Ravenshoe Sideroad

The Ravenshoe Sideroad, which separates East Gwillimbury in the south, and Georgina in the north, in York Region, is currently, as of yesterday, home to at least seven Ospreys.  Five of them are to be found in the area of a nest on the north side of the sideroad, perched upon a mobile irrigation unit.  Another can be found in a nest atop a pole at the end of Bruce Avenue, north of the sideroad.   The seventh Osprey can be found upon a light tower above the baseball diamonds on the north side of the sideroad.   These seven birds auger well for a season of excellent Osprey-watching.

An apparent sad end...

Crippled Great Blue Heron

I spotted this Great Blue Heron in a dirt field, on the edge of Ravenshoe Sideroad, on Monday of this week.   From a distance it looked to be too short for a 'Great Blue'.  When I enlarged the photo, the bird appeared to be standing on its knees.   The bottom portions of its legs were bent forward and and the bird was not moving at all.   It seems an accident had taken place and it was no longer able to stand naturally.  Unfortunately, the bird seemed unable to move on its lower legs at all and was reluctant to fly also.  I was left with a sad and somewhat helpless feeling about its fate before moving on.
