2021 Audubon Photography Awards ~ Amateur Award Winner

Amateur Award Winner ~ Robin Ulery

Shown above is the the photo that has won the Amateur Award Winner category in the 2021 Audubon Photography Awards.   The photo of a Sandhill Crane and its 'colt' was taken by Robin Ulery at Johns Lake, in Winter Garden, Florida.   I spotted this photo in my recent online edition of the September Eastern Crane Bulletin.   Other category winning photos can be viewed on the same site, or on the Audubon website.

Puntledge River Salmon

My B.C. friend Dave Kemp, who often sends me bird photos from the east side of Vancouver Island, has surprised me with a serious of Pink Salmon photos that he took in the Puntledge River, about five miles inland from the Georgia Strait, west of Comox.   I hope my birding friends find these salmon images eye-catching.   I would not be able to identify these as Pink, Coho, Chinook, or Sockeye.

Richmond Hill Millpond...

I seldom see shorebirds at the Richmond Hill Millpond, but this sandpiper, along with two others caught my eye this past Sunday.  I think they were Solitary Sandpipers.

There is just one Mute Swan at the millpond now, but it is a favourite photographic subject.

Above, one of the numerous female Mallards is seen grooming, a never-ending job for a duck.   Below is a juvenile Double-Crested Cormorant.   The Double-Cresteds are widespread in eastern North American and are seen regularly now at the Richmond Hill Millpond. 

The Richmond Hill Millpond is a popular spot with many people

relaxing on its banks.

At Aurora's McKenzie's Wetlands...

This female Mallard was one of four that I came across recently at the McKenzie Marsh in Aurora.  

Three took off but this one stayed to groom herself....first on the left, then on the right, finally posing for a portrait (at top).   After I got my pictures, she joined her friends on the water.

Although there are several seed feeders quite close to the cedar hedge in this photo, one of the regular chick-a-dees at the feeders hangs upside-down and pecks away at cedar buds.

Ospreys and Turkeys Vultures on Ravenshoe Sideroad...

The Ospreys are staring to spread out in the Ravenshoe marshlands, north of Queensville, and one has to persist in finding them.   I spotted one at the Ravenshoe ballpark, west of Leslie Street and two more further west at the end of Canal Street.   The out-of-focus photo below shows one of the Osprey with a fish in its talons, and the photo below that, shows an Osprey on the wing, but being closely observed by a smaller, but protective raptor.

Meanwhile, below, one of two nearby Turkey Vultures stay roosted on nearby power poles watching the scene unfold.
