Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma rufum)

Photo by Martina Nordstrand / Macauley Library
There are 8 North American Thrasher species, of which the foxy- brown, Brown Thrasher is the most widespread.   It is found in southern Canada and across the central and eastern United States.
Thrashers are to many the most melodious birds in North America.
The Brown Thrasher is reported to have the biggest song repertoire of all North America birds with more than 1,100 types recorded!
They are fairly common in hedgerows  and woodland edges in their range, but are rare in the west and Maritimes.
According to my 'Kenn Kaufman' bird guide, the Brown Thrasher is declining in may areas.
