Certain Plover species, particularly golden-plovers, rank among the absolute elite tier of long-distance migratory land and shorebirds globally. Species such as the America Golden-Plover undertake annual round-trip journeys of up to 40,000 kilometres (25,000 miles) between Arctic tundra breeding grounds and southern South America.
