This is a large and loud plover of open country almost everywhere in North America, except for the far north. It is most noteworthy for its behaviour when approached. They can do an extremely convincing broken-wing act, flopping along the ground to lure intruders away from nesting sites in particular. They are most readily identified by two black chest bands and a white collar.
