The National Geographic Society Field Guide to the Birds of North America says the Purple Finch is "not purple but rose over most the adult male's body, brightest on head and rump". Adult females and immatures are heavily streaked below. It is found across Canada and in the eastern half of the United States. It is fairly common and found in coniferous or mixed woodlands.
