Red-bellied Woodpecker
(Melanerpes carolinus)
Primarily a bird of the southeast United States, but in recent years it has been expanding its range to the north into southern Ontario. Despite its name, the red on the belly is not often visible in the field. My photos here do clearly show the red on the belly. They were taken on the back deck of an old friend, coincidently named Ted Bird.
