The Hooded Merganser has a long, thin, serrated bill that helps this diver catch fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. It has a puffy rounded crest. The male's bill is dark and and its white head patch is fan shaped and very conspicuous when its crest is raised. The female is brownish overall and also has a head crest. in both sexes the head crest is flattened when in flight.
This bird is common over most of eastern Canada and the U.S.A. In the breeding season, it is found on woodland ponds, rivers and backwaters. Its crest makes it noticeably distinguishable from other merganser species.
