NORTHERN Red-shafted FLICKER

British Columbia nature photographer, Dave Kemp, has passed along some excellent photos from the eastern side of Vancouver Island, of a Northern Red-shafted Flicker. This big woodpecker is noticeably different from the Eastern/Northern Yellow-shafted Flicker. The two types from each side of North America meet in southwestern Canada and the western Great Plains, where they interbreed regularly, producing many intermediates.
