Western Red-shafted Flicker
(Colaptes auratus)
These photos of a Red-shafted Flicker by Vancouver Island photographer Dave Kemp clearly shows the distinguishing
colour features of the western Northern Flicker from the eastern Northern Yellow-shafted Flicker. The western Red-shafted Flicker has salmon-pink under the wings and tail and a red mustache stripe. The eastern Yellow-shafted Flicker has bright yellow under the wings and tail and a black mustache stripe.
Preening: a never ending job
