Song Sparrow
Melospiza melodia
Arguably the best known of our native sparrows, it is commonly found everywhere in North America, including my back yard. Its vast range contributes to a great geographical variation to appearance. In the continental northwest, they are large, dark and long-billed, quite a contrast to the familiar eastern birds I am familiar with.
